When the second installment of Back to the Future premiered in 1989, there’s no doubt that the coolest part about it was the look at fashions and trends of the future.
One of the standout accessories that we were privy to were the Nike Mags or Nike Back to the Future Sneakers as they’re now known, which featured automatic laces and flashing lights.
Although this was part of the spectacle of the movie and it was fun to imagine a world where self-lacing shoes were a reality, it was always just a fantasy and nothing more until Nike announced they would be releasing the shoes for real in 2016.
These shoes might not be the most expensive shoes ever made, but they certainly come close, however, they still are a marvel to look at and give us an insight about how shoes in the future might be.
Back to the Future Sneakers in the movie featured flashing lights, and laced up once the wearer put their foot inside, and that’s exactly what these do real life. The technology behind the Nike Mags uses the pressure from your foot on the sole of the shoe to initiate the self-lacing mechanism, and alongside this feature, it has some cool lights and effects as well.
The shoes are fitted with a battery which will give you about three hours of use when you have the lights on, and it can last days without them, and charging the battery takes just a few hours. Known as some of the most expensive sneakers in the world, you will certainly get your money’s worth with the cool factor here.
While there could still be many advancements made with this type of technology, it’s amazing to see that we’re now getting accessories and gadgets that were once the subject of science fiction, and especially so when it comes from one of the most famous movies of all time.
If you’re hoping to get your hands on the Nike Mags, there may be a bit of a wait. Nike released just 89 pairs of these, and according to Wired Magazine at a recent auction, just one pair went for $100,000 to a bidder from Hong Kong. Other pairs were won through an auction that cost just around $10 to enter and raised millions of dollars.
However, Nike won’t be pocketing all of the profits as they’ve teamed up with Michael J Fox from Back to the Future fame to use proceeds to raise money for Parkinson’s Disease. So while the shoes themselves are very cool and would be a blast to use, it’s great to know the money is going somewhere worthwhile too.
